CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Missouri State swimming & diving program picked up key wins at Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium on Saturday (Nov. 3), taking down conference rival Southern Illinois. While the No. 23 men's team steamrolled the Salukis in a 169-71 performance, the MSU squeaked by SIU with a one-point win, 122-121. In addition to winning big over the Salukis, the men's team cranked out a 167-76 victory over the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Both Bears' squads captured first place in the 400 medley relay to begin Saturday's meet. The women were led by Ahlin, Sander, Balzam and Uzcategui, while Missouri State's A- and B-relays finished 1-2 in the men's race.

Sophomore's Vitalii Baryshok, Paul Le and Chris Carpenter increased the Bears' lead with consecutive wins in the 200 free (1:39.01), 50 free (20.80) and 200 IM (1:54.11). In addition to Carpenter, junior Colin Hill and senior Daan Jansen completed the 1-2-3 sweep, all finishing under 1:55.

Anna Ahlin and Renata Sander were also successful in the 200 IM, taking first and second place with times of 2:08.91 and 2:10.54, respectively.

The Bears then rattled off another round of wins in the 200 fly, 100 free and 200 backstroke on both the men's and women's side. Butterfly specialist Roni Balzam defeated 2012 MVC champion Isabela Castro in the event by 2.63 seconds. Sophomore Matthew Wilson and junior Michal Bulak took the top two positions in the men's 200 fly.

To keep the momentum going, Missouri State's Andrea Uzcategui and Kate Gately picked up another 1-2 finish over the Salukis.

Baryshok and Le remain unbeaten on the season after swimming to first-place finishes in the 100 free and 200 back for their second individual victories of the afternoon.

In the women's 200 back, Ahlin dominated the field winning the event by more than six seconds. Teammate Megan Holthoff edged out SIU's Hannah Pinion by one hundredth for second place.

To finish out the individual events, the Bears took home a 1-2-3 finish (Sander, Powers, Gean) in the women's 200 breast and a 1-2 finish in the men's breaststroke event (Springer, Hill).

Needing to finish with at least second- and third-place points, the MSU women did just that in the 200 free relay to secure the one-point victory. To finish the weekend trip, the quartet of Le, Jack Snow, Isaac McKnight and Caleb Schuermann recorded the Bears' top 200 free relay time this season at 1:23.56.
