The Missouri State women's soccer team (2-3-0) began a two-game road trip with a 3-1 defeat at Oklahoma (3-3-0) on Sunday night in Norman, Okla. Jeslynne McGrath scored her first career goal late to get the Bears on the board.
Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead on a Michelle Alexander goal in the 14th minute. The Sooners doubled the lead in the 30th minute and the match went to half with Oklahoma up, 2-0.
But the Bears held their own, despite the score. Missouri State got off three shots, two on frame, and earned two corner kicks in the first half.
The second half saw the Bears continue to pressure the Sooners. Missouri State continued to get off shots, totaling nine in the match. But Oklahoma would tack on another goal in the 82nd minute to take a 3-0 lead.
Jeslynne McGrath scored in the 89th minute to keep the Bears from being shutout. Michelle Mayne-Nicholls took a free kick from the top of the box that McGrath deflected past OU keeper Kelsey Devonshire.
Despite being outshot, 20-9, in the match, Missouri State was accurate with the shots taken. The Bears forced Devonshire to make seven saves as eight of MSU's shots were on target. Shelby Stewart led Missouri State with three shots, all coming on net.
Missouri State will travel to Arkansas on Tuesday (Sept. 6) before returning to Plaster Field next Friday (Sept. 9) vs. Tulsa. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.
