The Missouri State women's soccer team (7-3-1, 1-0-0) will open the home portion of the MVC schedule on Friday night with a match against Illinois State (6-4-0, 1-0-0). Kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m. at Plaster Field.
The Bears come in riding a six-game unbeaten streak dating back to Sept. 6. MSU is 5-0-1 since Labor Day, including a conference-opening road win at Indiana State last Friday, 1-0. Missouri State is also unbeaten against the Redbirds in the last three matchups and has allowed just a single goal to ISU over that span.
The last match between Missouri State and Illinois State was in the 2010 MVC Tournament semifinals. Then-junior goalkeeper Jessica Teahan had a career night, making 11 saves during regulation and overtime. She then turned aside four of the Redbirds' five penalty kicks to advance the Bears to the MVC Championship match.
Now a senior, Teahan has racked up an MVC-leading four shutouts this year. She has started all 11 matches and has combined with junior goalkeeper Chelsea Voet to allow MSU opponents just one goal in the past six matches. Teahan was named the MVC Goalkeeper of the Week this week.
Freshman Bethany Smith leads all Bears with three goals and eight points this season. Junior Michelle Sommer has added two goals and leads the squad in shots (42) and shots on goal (16). Smith and Sommer were named MVC Newcomer and Offensive Player of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday.
Following Friday's match, Missouri State will wrap up the three-game home stand against Drake on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
