The Missouri State men's soccer team (2-3-0) lost a hard-fought match against 12th-ranked Louisville (4-0-1), 2-1. Missouri State's lone goal came from junior Heath Melugin. Senior Alex Riggs faced a whopping 18 shots and amassed seven saves.
The game started out very well for the Bears, as Melugin's goal in the 14th minute was the lone goal of the first half. Junior David Buckenheimer assisted on the goal. Louisville took seven shots in the half, only three of which were on goal.
The second half was all Cardinals. Louisville junior Colin Rolfe scored in the 46th minute, tying the score in the first minute of the second half. Shortly after Louisville junior Nick DeLeon scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 53rd minute.
The Bears were only able to rattle off three shots against a staunch Louisville defense. However, the Bears are now only the second team this season to score against Cardinals keeper Andre Boureaux.
Missouri State will take to the pitch again on Tuesday, Sept 21, when they will face another ranked opponent, Tulsa. Tulsa is currently ranked third in the country. Game time is 7:00 p.m. in Tulsa, Okla.
