Missouri State Basketball Player Injured in Single-Car Accident

Missouri State men's basketball player Michael Porter is recovering from surgery in a Springfield hospital after sustaining serious injuries in a single-vehicle accident early Thursday, according to head coach Cuonzo Martin.

A crash report issued by the Missouri State Highway Patrol indicated the vehicle Porter was driving overturned and ejected him. The cause of the accident, which occurred in rural Christian County, is not specified in the report.

"We want to thank the Missouri State family for their concern and prayers for Michael and his family," said Martin. "He has a long road ahead of him, but all things considered, the doctors have indicated he is very fortunate."

Porter missed all but six games his freshman season in 2009-10 with a hamstring injury. The Sikeston, Mo., native scored 23 points and collected 13 points in limited action. He was recently approved for a medical redshirt which would give him four years of eligibility remaining with the Bears.

UPDATE (June 15, 2010)

Missouri State men's basketball player Michael Porter was released from St. John's Hospital in Springfield on Sunday (June 13) and has returned to his hometown of Sikeston, Mo. to recover at home with assistance from his family.

Team doctors will evaluate his recovery progress in approximately two weeks and will be better able to determine the status of his playing future at that time. Bears' head coach Cuonzo Martin indicated he and his staff are in communication with Porter daily.
