SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State freshman outside hitter
Christine McCartney is the Missouri Valley Conference volleyball Freshman of the Week for a second time this season, the league office announced Monday. McCartney also won the award Sept. 13.
McCartney led Missouri State in kills in both matches last week, finishing with 33 to average 4.12 per set. Saturday against Wichita State, the Arlington, Texas, native had a career-high 19 kills and hit .209 against the MVC’s best defense, a Shocker team that allowed opponents to hit just .125 entering the match. McCartney reached 19 kills in 43 attacks, leading to a 44 percent kill rate against the Shockers.
She put away kills at a 39 percent clip for the week and had 11 digs, five blocks and an ace in the two matches. Tuesday at SIU Edwardsville, the rookie had 14 kills to the lead Bears while adding seven digs and four blocks.
McCartney and the Bears (13-3, 4-1 MVC) travel to Creighton (10-6, 5-1) on Friday and Drake (17-3, 3-3) on Saturday. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 7 p.m.
