Today's Game: The Missouri State Bears conclude a three-game home stand this Saturday when they welcome the No. 3 ranked Northern Iowa Panthers (2-1) to Plaster Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Family Weekend at Missouri State. It is the Missouri Valley Football Conference opener for both teams.
This will be 30th meeting between the two teams and 15th matchup at Plaster Field. The Panthers have won three in a row between the clubs and lead the series 24-5, including a 42-0 victory over the Bears on 11/8/08 in Cedar Falls. Missouri State's last victory in the series came on 10/8/05 with a 24-21 victory at Plaster Field which snapped a six-game losing streak to UNI. The two teams have split the last two meetings at Plaster Field.
The Panthers are off to a 2-1 start after a narrow 17-16 loss to Iowa in the season opener, followed by home wins over South Dakota (66-7) and St. Francis (30-0) the past two weeks. They have allowed their opponents into the red zone just three times all season and have ridden the arm of senior quarterback Pat Grace to victory in back-to-back games. Grace is averaging 294 yards per game through the air, but has only used eight targets all season, including a team-high 13 receptions by D.P. Eyman. Grace has been intercepted just once, passed for seven touchdowns, and has rushed for three more scores.
Missouri State is also coming off back-to-back home wins, including Saturday's dominant 35-10 win over Murray State. The Bears held the Racers to just 3.8 yards per play and scored two defensive touchdowns while compiling a season-high 392 yards total offense. Cody Kirby (Jr., QB, Rogers, Ark.) threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns in the win while climbing to No. 3 on MSU's career passing list by becoming just the fourth Bears' passer to eclipse 4,000 career yards. Miguel Warren (Sr., TB, Raytown, Mo.) also had a great game, accounting for a team-high 146 all-purpose yards, including a 64-yard kickoff return, and a game-high and career-high 79 rushing yards.
Overall, Missouri State is 434-435-39 (.499) in 97 seasons all-time, including a 194-142-12 (.575) record in 67 seasons at Plaster Field, 64-86-1 (.427) mark in MVFC play, and 147-149-3 (.497) record at the NCAA Division I FCS level.
The Series: The Panthers lead the all-time series 24-5 and have won three in a row and nine of the last 10 games in the series. Missouri State is 3-11 at home against the Panthers, including a 1-1 mark in the last two games at Plaster Field. There have been four shutouts in the series -- all by UNI -- but just one shutout (1991) at Plaster Field. Missouri State's last win over UNI came on 10/8/05 when the Bears earned a 24-21 victory over then-No. 6 UNI.
Last season in Cedar Falls, the Bears were held to just 81 total yards in a one-sided 42-0 loss to the fourth-ranked Panthers. Pat Grace threw for 141 yards, while Corey Lewis rushed for 188 yards and two touchdowns for UNI. The Bears were shut out for the first time under Terry Allen and got 78 passing yards from Cody Kirby, while Clay Harbor and Chase Mejia shared team-high honors with four receptions.

He was 72-26 at UNI and five-time MVFC Coach of the Year, taking the Panthers to the NCAA FCS playoffs seven straight years. He took over the head coaching duties at Kansas in 1997 and was 20-33 in five years with the Big 12 Jayhawks (1997-2001). Prior to coming to MSU, he spent four seasons (2002-05) as associate head coach at Iowa State.

First and Ten: Ten Missouri state quick hits relating to today's game:
- This will be MSU's 300th game as a Division I program, having compiled a 147-149-3 (.497) record since 1982.
- This will be just Missouri State's second nationally-televised football game. The only other time the Bears have appeared on national TV was last year's 57-13 loss at Oklahoma State (9/13/08), also on FOX College Sports.
- Under Terry Allen, the Bears have won three games in a row just once. MSU won the 2006 season finale over Western Illinois before winning the first two games of 2007 with victories over Missouri S&T and UT Martin.
- The Bears are 15-58 all-time against teams ranked in the FCS Top 25. MSU defeated two Top 25 teams in 2007 under Terry Allen and beat then-No. 6 UNI at Plaster Field in 2005.
- All-America Tight end Clay Harbor has at least one pass reception in 25 straight games. That streak is now the second-longest string in Bears' history (the record is 33 by Jason Cannon, 1995-97). He is ranked as the top tight end in FCS football by Phil Steele's ranking service and a two-time AP All-America selection.
- In the Murray State game, Cody Kirby (Jr., QB, Rogers, Ark.) eclipsed 4,000 career passing yards, making him the fourth Missouri State signal caller to reach that milestone. With 223 passing yards against the Racers, Kirby surpassed MSU legend DeAndre Smith (4,080) for third place on the Bears' career passing list. Kirby now has 4189 yards and needs 693 more yards to catch Mitch Ware (4,882) for second place on the career list.
- The Bears have no players from the state of Iowa, however UNI boasts 10 players from the Show-Me State.
- The Bears will not have a home night games this season. This has not happened at MSU since 1950.
- Waylon Richardet (Jr., DE, Perryville, Mo.) was named as the Missouri Valley Football Conference's Defensive Player of the Week in the team's win over Murray State. He recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, was in on two sacks, and recorded 2.5 tackles for loss as part of his six total tackles.
- The Bears are 12-12-1 all-time in Valley openers, including a 1-1 record against UNI and 0-3 ledger under Allen.

Last Game: Behind a pair of defensive touchdowns and 392 yards of total offense, Missouri State turned back Murray State, 35-10, in the Bears' final non-conference game of the season.
Playing in wet conditions most of the day, Missouri State retaliated from an early 3-0 deficit with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Cody Kirby (Jr., QB, Rogers, Ark.) hit Cadarrius Dotson (Fr., WR, Memphis, Tenn.) on the team's first drive of the game and never looked back with 35 unanswered points.

In the second quarter, Missouri State's defense rose up with a series of sensational plays. The first momentum builder came on a 55-yard fumble recovery and return by Skylar Smith (Jr., S, Springfield, Mo.). Later in the quarter, Travis Ribbing (So., LB, Farmington, Mo.) sacked Murray State QB Jeff Ehrhardt, forcing the ball loose. Waylon Richardet (Jr., DT, Perryville, Mo.) jumped on the fumble in the end zone for a touchdown to increase the Bears' lead to 28-3.
On their their third possession of the third quarter, Missouri State drove 76 yards on just five plays for their final score of the day as Kirby hit tight end Wes Miller (Jr., TE, St. Joseph, Mo.) from 27 yards out to make it 35-3 with 1:03 to play in the period.
The Bears tallied seven sacks in the game, including 1.5 sacks by Richardet. MSU used its balanced rushing attack to account for 169 yards on 44 carries, including Miguel Warren's (Sr., TB, Raytown, Mo.) career-high 79 yards on six carries. Kirby was 17-for-28 through the air for 223 yards and three touchdowns. It was Kirby's first three-touchdown effort since Oct. 4, 2008 against Western Illinois and his first 200-yard passing effort in four games.
Team Captains: Missouri State will have five co-captains for the 2009 season, including a pair of seniors and three juniors. The Bears' 2009 captains include tight end Clay Harbor (Sr., Dwight, Ill.), cornerback Cedric Alvis (Sr., Columbia, Mo.), guard David Arkin (Jr., Wichita, Kan.), quarterback Cody Kirby (Jr., Rogers, Ark.), and safety Skylar Smith (Jr., Springfield, Mo.). Scouting UNI: The Panthers are off to a 2-1 start after a narrow 17-16 loss to Iowa in the season opener, followed by home wins over South Dakota (66-7) and St. Francis (30-0) the past two weeks.
