SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State University announced Monday that men's basketball player Shane Laurie will miss the remainder of his senior season after suffering a concussion in Saturday's home game against Southern Illinois.
The six-foot-two, 193-pound guard sustained an earlier concussion in a motorized scooter crash near campus on October 3, forcing him to miss the team's first 11 games this season. He also suffered a pair of concussions earlier in his athletic career, leading to the decision to end his basketball career after Saturday's injury took him out of the game late in the first half.
"Due to future health concerns, it's wise for Shane to forego future participation in competitive athletics and prevent the possibility of future trauma," said Ivan Milton, Missouri State's director of athletic training services.
Laurie played in 12 games for Missouri State this season and averaged 3.5 points and 2.0 rebounds.
"After the first concussion, I knew the risks associated with coming back," said Laurie. "I only know how to play one way, and I have no regrets. It's an unfortunate way to end my season, but I had a great playing career and hope to be right there with my teammates the rest of the way this season."
The Springfield native played in 105 games at Missouri State, starting 38. He collected 447 points, 224 rebounds, 175 assists and 91 steals. He earned MSU Coors Player of the Week honors for the week of January 4-10, 2009 after scoring 19 points in a two-game span with six assists and eight rebounds in road losses to Evansville and Northern Iowa.
