Garrison Earns MVC Player of the Week Honor

ST. LOUIS -- After turning in a banner week that included new career highs for points, rebounds, assists and steals in helping the Missouri State Lady Bears earn their first November road victory in 26 years, Casey Garrison has been named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

The award is the sixth weekly MVC honor and the second Player of the Week nod for Garrison, who was named the conference's top newcomer four times as a rookie last year en route to earning the Valley's Freshman of the Year award.

Against Arkansas State last Friday, Garrison posted one of the most impressive all-around performances in Missouri State history with a 35-point, 17-rebound effort to propel the Lady Bears to a 73-65 win in Jonesboro. The Bolivar, Mo., product converted a career-high 13 field goals on 25 attempts to go along with two assists and five steals. She came up big when it mattered most, scoring 21 second-half points to help MSU pick up its first win in a true November road contest since a Nov. 26, 1983 decision over Missouri-St. Louis. Garrison wasn't quite done, registering a near-triple-double effort in Sunday's 12-point setback at Eastern Michigan. She totaled 18 points and five rebounds, as well as career highs of nine assists and seven steals to finish the week with averages of 26.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 6.0 steals.

Garrison's remarkable effort against Arkansas State eclipsed her previous career scoring high of 33, while her 17 boards also marked a new personal best and tied four other performances as the sixth-highest single-game total in Lady Bear history. She also achieved a feat only one other player in Missouri State history had accomplished prior to Friday's game. Garrison joined Cindy Henderson, who scored 37 points and grabbed 24 rebounds on Jan. 20, 1975, as the only other Lady Bear on record to score at least 35 points and record at least 15 rebounds in a single game. It was also Garrison's second career double-double consisting of 30 points or more, making her only the fourth MSU player on record (along with Henderson, Jeanette Tendai and Jenni Lingor) to record more than one such game.

Through the Lady Bears' first five games of the season, Garrison leads the Missouri Valley Conference in assists (6.0 apg.), steals (4.0 spg.), offensive rebounds (4.4 rpg.), field goals made (38) and free throws made (29), while ranking second in overall scoring (21.4 ppg.) and third in rebounding (8.8 rpg.).

Missouri State (3-2) will wrap up its four-game road swing this weekend when it travels to Manhattan, Kan., to take part in the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic. The Lady Bears will square off against UTEP in a 4 p.m., contest Friday, then meet either Grambling or host Kansas State in a Saturday afternoon match-up.
