Volleyball Closes Home Season With MVC Sweep of Bradley

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Missouri State volleyball team swept Missouri Valley Conference foe Bradley by scores of 25-16, 25-9, 25-14 in the 2009 home finale Saturday at Hammons Student Center in Springfield.

The Bears improved to 19-9 overall and 12-4 in MVC play, while Bradley dropped to 9-21 and 0-16 in the league. A night after falling to UNI, Missouri State was helped by the Panthers as they dispatched of Wichita State in five sets Saturday, dropping the Shockers back into a tie for second with the Bears. MSU currently owns the tie-breaker based on its two wins over Creighton compared one WSU win over the Jays.

MSU senior Addie Foley recorded a double-double in her final home match, landing 14 kills and 12 digs while hitting .429. Fellow senior Sara Staubach added five kills and a block as the Bears matched a school record by committing a mere five attack errors on the way to a .347 team hitting percentage. The Braves were held to .074 hitting.

The Bears went on a 5-0 run early in the first set to take a 7-2 lead and played error-free through their first 14 attacks to lead 10-5. Bradley pulled within two at 10-8, but MSU’s 3-0 run put the home team in control for good. Foley had four kills without an error in the set, while Kelley Michnowicz and Shayla Patrick had identical three-kill, no-error lines.

Missouri State jumped to a 10-1 lead in the second set and eventually led 19-3 while allowing just one kill to BU at that point. The Braves managed three kills in the set and hit -.036.

Bradley took a 6-2 lead in the third set before the Bears fought back for a 7-7 tie. MSU earned its first lead at 10-9 and cruised to the win, closing out on a 17-5 run. The offense hit .455 in the set, landing 16 kills against one error.

The Bears had five service aces while yielding one to the league’s top serving team. MSU out-blocked the Braves 9-1, and Cara Hackmann scooped 13 digs to become the third player in school history with 600 digs in a single season.

The Bears being the final weekend of the regular season Nov. 20 with a 6 p.m. contest at Indiana State.
