November 11, 2009 | Men's Soccer
Senior Missouri State men's soccer player Johannes Demarzi was named Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week by the league office today. It's the second time this season he has received the award (Sept. 23). Demarzi also received MVC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday of this week.
Demarzi recorded his league-leading 10th assist of the season on the game-winning goal in Missouri State's 1-0 win over Evansville last Wednesday to clinch the conference title. Demarzi is fifth in the country in assists, all while playing the back line for the Bears.
On the defensive side of the ball, he led the Missouri State to its ninth shutout of the season and a season-low six shots allowed in Wednesday's match.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
Missouri State travels to Des Moines, Iowa, for the MVC Tournament this weekend. The Bears will face Evansville at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Cownie Soccer Complex in the first semifinal match of the day. With a win of Friday, the Bears would advance to their fifth MVC Tournament Final in team history.
