The mens’ soccer team played to a 1-1 tie in regulation in their first exhibition match at Oral Roberts University on Saturday night, Aug. 23. The Bears fought back to beat ORU 2-1 in the first over time.
After watching his young Bears in real game action Saturday night in Tulsa head coach Jon Leamy liked what he saw. Leamy stated “We answered some questions tonight and we may have raised a few more, but I think we can now form a plan of attack going into the season.” The exhibition game was important for a young Bears team to get some game experience under their belt before they start a tough schedule next week.
Kyle Windmueller scored the Bears only goal during regulation 16 minutes into the first period. The Bears defense held the lead until Oral Roberts’ Josh Erickson scored with 14 minutes remaining in the second period. The Bears responded seven mintues into the first overtime period with a Gerard Barbero goal that secured the victory for Missouri State.
“It was neat to see the guys respond in overtime after giving up that goal at the end of regulation” said Coach Leamy. The young Bears response in overtime showed their character to Coach Leamy and his staff answering some crucial questions.
The Bears will start regular season play in the Drake Tournament on Aug .30 against SIU-Edwardsville at 5 p.m.
