Eleanor Jones “E.J.” Pitts was a standout at SMS from 1970-1974, participating in volleyball, softball, and track. Pitts was a four-year starter under Dr. Mary Jo Wynn and Linda Dollar in volleyball and helped lead the Bears to four state championships, four national tournament appearances and two sixth place finishes. Pitts was also a star pitcher on the softball teams of coach Kay Hunter and proved to be one of the team’s best in the track events, including the javelin and softball throw. Pitts later became a highly-successful high school coach in Alabama.
