Men's Soccer Aces Evansville in First Conference Win

The Missouri State men’s soccer team defeated conference foe Evansville, 2-0, in the Bears’ first conference win.  Despite being outshot by the Aces, the Bears got stellar goal-play by Alex Riggs to secure victory.

The Bears opened the scoring four minutes before the half when Gerard Barbero dibbled in and blasted in a shot that ricocheted off of the crossbar from 20 yards.  The goal was Barbero’s first of the season and gave the Bears the 1-0 lead.

MSU added a second goal 15 minutes into the second half when Johannes Demarzi hit Jordan Barnes in front of the goal with a crossing pass.  Barnes turned around a defender with some fancy footwork and slipped a shot just inside the left post and out of reach of the Aces’ goalkeeper Alec Duffy. The goal was Barnes second of the season.

The Bears were outshot by the Aces by a 15-11 margin.  Riggs secured four saves for the Bears compared to his counter part Duffy’s three.  The win pushes the Bears record to 4-7-3 overall and 1-1-0 in the conference.

The Bears will have a week off before they continue conference play at home against second ranked Creighton.  The game will be at 7 p.m. at Plaster Field on Tuesday (Oct. 21).
