MSU Women's Soccer wins season opener against Western Michigan

The Missouri State University women’s soccer team opened the 2007 season Friday, Aug. 31, with a 2-0 victory over Western Michigan University at Plaster Field.

Junior forward Caroline Sweeney put the Bears on the board with a goal in the third minute of the first half with an assist by sophomore Samantha Aguilar. Aguilar sent a cross that found Sweeney one-yard out. Sweeney made a shot past Broncos’ keeper Jessica Laning.

The Bears continued to dominate the second half with a 21-yard free kick by senior Lauren Heck. Heck fired the shot high over the Broncos’ defensive wall into the back of the net. The Missouri State defense limited Western Michigan to only five shots, three shots on goal, with MSU goalkeeper Jackie Jasper recording three saves in the net. The Bears recorded 20 shots, and 10 shots on goal, as they found themselves on the offensive side of the field the majority of the night.

The Bears will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 1, at Plaster Field when they host Southeast Missouri State at 1:00 p.m.
