Jasmyne Watson, a 5-6 point guard from Houston, Texas, has committed to join the Missouri State women’s basketball program for the 2007-08 season. Watson is the fourth player to commit to the Lady Bears since Nyla Milleson was named head coach on April 9.
Watson was a four-year starter at Clear Brook High School, helping the Wolverines to three district titles and four state playoff appearances. As a senior, she averaged 15.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, 3.4 assists and 2.4 steals en route to earning district MVP honors and her third straight first-team all-district selection.
With Watson at the point, Clear Brook went 45-3 in district play and brought home District 24-5A titles in each of her first three years at the school. She posted averages of 12.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists as a junior for the 24-6 Wolverines after chipping in 11.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 blocks per outing as a sophomore. Clear Brook posted back-to-back 12-0 district finishes in 2003-04 and 2004-05, with Watson earning all-district accolades each year. She was an honorable mention pick as a freshman before receiving the first of her three straight first-team nods as a sophomore in 2004-05.
"We feel like Jasmyne is the perfect fit as a point/combo guard in our system," Milleson commented. "There’s no question that she can help us at the point, but we also feel like she has the capability to play alongside Tahnee as the two guard. She’s physically very strong and gifted in that she has the ability to penetrate and make things happen, either by scoring or creating scoring opportunities for others."
Watson joins fellow freshmen-to-be Marisha Brown and Jacque Griggs, as well as junior college transfer Tiffany Coppage, as members of Milleson’s first Missouri State recruiting class. Janette Jackson, a prep guard out of Denver, Colo., who committed to MSU last November, rounds out the class.
