The Missouri State University swimming and diving teams swept their counterparts from cross-town rival Drury University in dual meet action Friday night at the Hammons Student Center pool. The host Bears prevailed in the men’s meet 144-97 and Missouri State was victorious in the women’s competition, 132-111.
Coach Jack Steck’s Missouri State men won one relay and seven individual events while Drury claimed the other relay and four individual events. Double winners for the Bears were Eduardo Pajares in the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke and Eric Ducourneau in the one-meter and three-meter diving events. Yiwen Huang won both the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly for the Panthers of coach Brian Reynolds.
In the women’s competition, Jordan Hawkins of Missouri State continued her early-season dominance in the sprints, winning the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events while Matana Wellman of the Bears won both the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle races.
Drury’s lone double winner in the women’s meet was Jing Hua in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. Missouri State won six of 11 individual events and the teams divided the two relay races.
The Missouri State women’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Wellman, Andi Rojas-Jimenz, Hawkins and Breanna Hollar set a new Hammons pool mark in a time of 3:32.75 minutes.
Missouri State will host the 5th Annual Dale Williams Alumni Meet Saturday at the Hammons Pool, in conjunction with Missouri State Homecoming festivities. The Bears’ men’s and women’s teams will compete against alumni squads of former MSU swimmers. Competition begins at 5 p.m. The event is named in honor of Dale Williams, who established the Missouri State men’s swimming program in 1965 and coached the Bears until 1979.
