Saint Louis University’s Calum Angus scored in the 14th minute and the Billikens held on to defeat the Missouri State men’s soccer team, 1-0, in an intrastate matchup in St. Louis, Mo., Tuesday night. The Bears nearly tied it up when junior Ryan Anderson hit the crossbar in the 55th minute, but it proved to be Missouri State’s best scoring chance of the night. Goalkeeper Lance Parker recorded eight saves to keep the Bears in the match, but the offense could not muster a goal for the third straight match. Saint Louis improved to 4-3-1, while Missouri State fell to 5-4-3 on the season.
Saint Louis came out on the offensive with five shots in the first 14 minutes, including the match’s lone score. The goal came on a four-yard header by Angus following a Billikens corner kick. Saint Louis outshot the Bears 15-5, and held a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. Parker’s career-high eight saves kept the Bears in it, but the offense could not find the back of the net, as the Billikens held on for the victory.
Anderson led the Bears with two shots, including the near goal in the second half. Junior Yanik Joseph had the Bears’ only shot on goal, in the 10th minute, and seniors Justin Douglass and Kyle Hopson each had a shot for MSU.
Missouri State will return home to open Missouri Valley Conference play against Eastern Illinois University, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Plaster Sports Complex.
