The Missouri State women's soccer team held Eastern Illinois off the scoreboard as goals from Caroline Sweeney and Laura Galati lifted the Bears (7-2) over the Panthers (2-5-1), 2-0, on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Plaster Field.
The Bears struck early in the fifth minute of the match as Sweeney directed a free kick from Caroline Rooker past EIU goalkeeper Jenny Williams to put Missouri State up 1-0.
Missouri State boosted its lead to 2-0 on Galati's first goal of the season. Freshman defender Samantha Aguilar fed freshman forward Nicole Logan who crossed the ball through traffic. Galati's late run on the far side of the field proved to be effective as she fired the ball from 27 yards out to the back of the net with two and half minutes remaining in the first half.
The Bears outshot their opponent, 13-12, and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Sweeney once again led the offensive attack, recording five shots and one goal. MSU's Jackie Jasper earned her fourth solo shutout of the year and was credited with six saves. Williams tallied three saves for the Panthers and allowed two goals.
Despite the rain and wet turf, Missouri State earned its sixth straight win, tying the most consecutive wins in a season record set in 1996.
Missouri State battles Memphis on Friday, Sept. 22, at Plaster Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
