Missouri State sophomores Caroline Sweeney and Jackie Jasper have been named this week's Brine/Missouri Valley Conference Players of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Sweeney earned offensive accolades and Jasper was awarded with defensive honors.
Sweeney scored the Bears' only goals in their 2-1 victory over Alabama A&M Friday. The first goal, assisted by Megan Cassady and Kate Blair, tied the match at 1-1 in the first half. The game-winning goal happened in the seventh minute of overtime off a pass from Jessica Smits. The goals were Sweeney's third and fourth of the season. She led the offensive attack, recording seven shots in the game, including five on goal.
In Sunday's match against Louisiana Tech, Sweeney once again led the Bears in shots posting seven total and three on goal. She helped guide the Bears to their second shutout victory this season. Sweeney was named to the Lady Razorback All-Tournament team for her outstanding offensive play on the weekend.
Missouri State goalkeeper Jasper led the Bears' defense to their second shutout of the season Sunday against Louisiana Tech and their 2-1 victory over Alabama A&M Friday. In Friday's match, Jasper recorded five saves, including two crucial ones in the second half at 68:31 and 75:39, which put the match into overtime. Jasper prevented the Bears from being down 2-0 in the first half with her save in the 22nd minute.
Jasper posted two saves in Sunday's 1-0 shutout over Louisiana Tech. This is Jasper's second shutout of the year. She has played every minute in goal this season.
After starting the season 1-2, the Bears have won four straight games to post a 5-2 mark in non-conference women’s soccer. The Bears are atop the conference standings, followed by Creighton (3-3-1) and Illinois State (2-2-2).
Missouri State will be back at home Friday at Cooper Sports Complex to compete against Arkansas-Little Rock at 7 p.m.
