Missouri State men's swimming tops Truman State; women fall

The Missouri State men's swimming and diving team topped Truman State, 57-38, as the women fell 57-38, to the Bulldogs, Saturday at the Pershing Natatorium in Kirksville, Mo.

The men started the meet off with a victory in the 200 medley relay, led by Tony Freeman, Matt Beasley, Victor Serra and anchored by Ignacio Gayo with a time of 1:34.40. The next win of the meet was J.R. Pyle in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:00.41. Gayo was a strong sprint freestylist as he finished first in the 50 free at 21.93. Beasley and A.J. Goertzen had a one-two finish in the 200 IM at 1:52.82 and 1:59.61, respectively. The Bears also pushed to a first and second-place finish in the 100 butterfly with Serra at 51.68 and Seth Johnson at 52.95. Freeman added another first-place win for Missouri State in the 100 backstroke, with a time of 52.75.

Goertzen and Victor Riffel battled it out in the 500 freestyle, but it was Goertzen who touched the wall first at 4:51.93 giving him the win for the event. Riffel came in a close second-place finish at 4:52.33. The final victory of the night belonged to Johnson in the 100 breaststroke, finishing at 59.08.

The women struggled against the Bulldogs, as they finished in the number two spot in nine of 11 events. The lone individual win came from Liz Geisler in the 500 freestyle who swam her best time of the season at 5:05.31. The 400 freestyle relay team made up of Marcy O'Neil, Andi Rojas, Geisler, and Jordan Hawkins, had a close first place finish in 3:34.44, touching the wall only .30 of a second quicker than Truman State.

Courtney Phillips swam her best time of the season in the 1,000 freestyle at 10:32.47, while Geisler swam her best time in the 200 free at 1:55.17, earning them both second-place finishes. Hawkins also had a number two finish, swimming her best time of the season in the 100 freestyle at 53.17.

The Bears' swimming and diving teams will be back in action Friday, Nov. 18, as they head to West Lafayette, Ind., to compete in the Purdue University Invitational.
