A game-winning penalty kick from Evansville sophomore Heidi Grey ended the Missouri State women's soccer season, Sunday, with the Bears losing 4-2 on penalty kicks in the opening round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at Cooper Sports Complex, after the match ended in a 2-2 tie after two overtime periods. The Purple Aces advance to the MVC Tournament semifinals where they will face Creighton, Friday.
Evansville put in the first goal of the shootout, with junior Sarah Groves sending the ball into the net, then Angela Parsons followed with a goal for Missouri State. EU senior Emily Kutzler scored on the Aces second attempt, then a miss by Allison Osmundson for the Bears and Danielle Brand for Evansville, gave the Aces a 2-1 edge. Caroline Rooker stepped up for Missouri State and drilled one into the net to tie it up at 2-2. Evansville freshman Rocky Hearst put in the next shot for the Aces, then after a miss by the Bears' Lauren Heck, Grey put in the game winner, ending the Bears' season with a record of 9-4-5.
Evansville got on the board just 13:12 into the match, with freshman Keisha Malone scoring her eighth goal of the season for the Aces.
Junior Chelsea Anderson answered for the Bears in the 31st minute, as she sent a shot in that was saved by EU goalkeeper Rayna Post, but Anderson got her own rebound and put the ball into the back of the net, knotting the score at 1-1.
Evansville freshman Kayla Lambert put the Purple Aces up 2-1, with her 16th goal of the season at the 56:08 mark, but Lauren Heck answered 12 minutes later off a feed from Anderson, tying the match at 2-2. Neither team would find the net in the remainder of regulation play, and two overtime periods, sending the match to a shootout, where the Aces advanced over the Bears.
