Freshman defender Allison Osmundson's goal with just over three minutes left in the first half wouldn't be enough for the Missouri State women's soccer team, as the Redbirds of Illinois State (5-5-3; 1-1-1 in MVC) battled back to tie the match, that went to two overtime periods before ending in a 1-1 draw, in Missouri Valley Conference action Friday night at Cooper Sports Complex. The Bears, 8-2-3 overall and 3-0-1 in Valley play, continue conference play at home Sunday against the Drake Bulldogs, with game time set for 1 p.m.
Angela Parsons sent a free kick into the box at the 41:43 mark that was knocked around and put in by Osmundson for her fourth goal of the season, to put the Bears up 1-0 going into intermission.
The score remained 1-0 until the 80th minute when Illinois State midfielder Yvonne Northover blasted a shot from 20 yards out that just slipped through the hands of Missouri State goalkeeper Jackie Jasper into the back of the net, knotting the score at 1-1.
Kate Hercules had a great chance for the Bears with 54 seconds to play in the first overtime period, heading a Megan Beebe corner kick that sailed just left of the goal.
Illinois State senior Joyce Kleinheinz put up a shot with 2:42 to play in the second overtime period that was blocked by a Missouri State defender, concluding the match with a 1-1 tie.
Missouri State outshot the Redbirds 17-14, with the Bears placing 11 shots on goal to Illinois State's five. Jasper pulled in four saves for the Bears and moves to 8-2-3 on the season, while Illinois State goalkeeper Andera Shaw moves to 4-2-1, earning 10 saves on the night in 110 minutes in goal.
