Former Missouri State standout Jermaine Saffold rejoined the Bears in January 2026 as the squad’s assistant wide receivers coach.
Saffold’s return to Springfield comes on the heels of an eight-year run as offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Lee’s Summit High School in suburban Kansas City where he also served as an athletic performance speed and agility coach. He was a key part of a memorable 2025 state championship run by the Tigers that culminated in a 10-4 record and memorable 41-37 victory over nearby Nixa High School in the Class 6 title game.
Athletes that have trained under Saffold include WR Isaiah Mozee (Nebraska), DE Williams Nwaneri (Nebraska, Missouri), WR Josh Manning (Missouri), WR Mitchell Tinsley (Bengals, Commanders, Penn State), and WR Xavier Lloyd (Chiefs, Missouri).
Prior to going into coaching, Saffold spent the 2012 season with the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League prior to a short stint with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos.Â
Saffold’s is Missouri State’s career leader in receiving yards (2,221) after racking up 139 receptions and 17 touchdowns with the Bears from 2009 to 2011. He also shares the squad record for TD receptions in a season with eight in 2011 and was a two-time All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection, including first-team distinction his senior season. He was also the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week his junior season after posting 9 receptions for 114 yards in a win over Youngstown State.
His 139 receptions ranks No. 4 all-time at Missouri State, while his 17 touchdowns is tied for No. 3. Likewise, his 913 receiving yards in 2011 is No. 3 on the Bears’ season chart, and his 31 consecutive games with a pass reception ranks No. 3.Â
The Grandview, Mo., native began his collegiate career at Central Missouri (2007) and had to sit out the 2008 season as a transfer-in-residence at Mo State.Â
He was a starter and all-conference performer for Coach Jason Godfrey at Grandview High where he helped the Bulldogs to a 7-4 record and state playoff appearance his junior season. Saffold also finished 10th in the Class 4 state track meet in the 100-meter dash as a senior and also took fourth at the highly competitive KU Relays (10.91).
