Transferring from MSU requires very careful thought. You must follow below requirements should you decide to transfer from Missouri State:
- You must immediately inform your coach of your interest in going elsewhere. It is suggested that you and your coach meet with your sport administrator regarding your decision. Before you discuss any possibilities with a potential new school, that school must first receive written permission from the MSU Athletics Department. If you or your parents contact a potential new school, that institution is obligated to let MSU know that you or your parents have done so. The potential new school must first receive written permission from MSU before having any further contact with you.
- According to NCAA rules, you must complete one year of residency at your new institution before you are eligible to participate in athletics there, unless you meet the requirements for a transfer exception. The most common transfer exception is the one-time transfer exception (see below). In most instances, this exception is not offered to football, basketball or baseball student-athletes.
- You may be granted a one-time exception to the above-mentioned one-year residency requirement under certain circumstances in sports other than football, basketball, and baseball. Being granted this exception means that you may be immediately eligible to compete at your new institution.
- Should you transfer to an institution within the MVC/MVFC, you will be subject to the intra-conference transfer rule and be required to serve an additional year in residency. (this results in a total of TWO years of sitting out depending on the sport).
- Effective October 15, 2018, Written Notification is required to be place on the Transfer Database.
The following conditions are required for a one-time transfer exception:
- You compete in a sport other than Division I football, basketball or baseball.
- It is your first transfer from one four-year college to another.
- You are in good academic standing at MSU and would be eligible to compete if you returned to MSU.
- The MSU Athletics Department certifies in writing that it does not object to the granting of an exception to the one-year residency requirement.
If MSU does not grant permission for you to discuss transfer possibilities with a potential new school, and/or if you are denied a transfer release to waive the one-year residence requirement, you can still transfer. If you do this, you will be ineligible to compete or receive athletics aid in your first academic year of residence at the new institution. You may also request a hearing to appeal the denial of the permission to contact and/or transfer release. If you have any questions about these policies, feel free to talk to your coach and the Compliance Office.
