October 23, 2024 | Football
SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State linebacker Dallas Winner-Johnson (RFr., St. Louis, Mo.) was announced Wednesday (Oct. 23) as part of a group of 30 mid-season standouts on the Stats Perform Jerry Rice Award Watch List which honors the FCS freshman player of the year.
The Rice Award, now in its 14th season, is named after legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice. Past recipients include Cooper Kupp, Chase Edmonds, Trey Lance, Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders.
Winner-Johnson is currently second on the Bears team in total tackles this season with 45 stops, including 17 solo tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a QB hurry. The Cardinal Ritter product has started five games and brought down a season-high 10 ball carriers in MSU's win at UT Martin earlier this season.Â
Players joining the Jerry Rice Award Watch List, which includes both true and redshirt freshmen, include two other Missouri Valley Football Conference performers -- running back CharMar Brown of North Dakota State and quarterback Elijah Owens of Indiana State.
The No 18-ranked Missouri State Bears (5-2) put a five-game win streak on the line this Saturday when they travel to Northern Iowa. Coach Ryan Beard's squad returns home on November 2 to lock horns with long-time rival Southern Illinois at 2 p.m.
