Second-Half Surge Pushes St. Mary’s over Bears

MORAGA, Calif. – Missouri State took a three-point lead into the half here Wednesday, but home standing Saint Mary's erupted for 42 points and shot 62 percent in the second half to score a 75-58 win over the Bears.
 
Isiaih Mosley scored 19 points in the opening half and finished with a team-high 21, while Donovan Clay posted 11 points and 7 rebounds.
 
Saint Mary's (11-3) got 27 points from Matthias Tass and 16 from Tommy Kuhse. Kuhse also led the home side with 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
 
The turning point came with twelve-and-a-half minutes to go as Mosley picked up his third foul with the game tied, 46-46, and the Gaels erupted for an 11-0 run over the next three minutes and change to turn it into a double-figure lead.
 
Ja'Monta Black's 3-pointer at the 8:34 mark stopped the bleeding for the moment, but Saint Mary's responded with seven more from there. The 18-3 stretch for the home side covered seven minutes with Kuhse scoring eight points in that stretch and 12 overall in the second period.
 
Missouri State (8-5) finished just under 50 percent from the field, making 25-of-62 (.481) shots overall, but struggled in the second half with just 9 makes in 26 attempts. The Bears were 6-of-20 (.300) from long range with Mosley hitting three from downtown.
 
The Bears were also out-rebounded, 34-22, with Prim's 8 caroms leading the visitors. MSU had just three offensive boards and turned the ball over 12 times.
 
Lu'Cye Patterson's 2 assists were a team high. He also scored 9 points in his fifth straight start.
 
Saint Mary's finished 30-of-56 (.536) overall with 4-of-10 (.400) from bonus distance and 11-of-14 (.786) at the stripe with 10 turnovers.
 
In the first half, Missouri State shot 62 percent and got an up-and-under layup by Mosley at the buzzer to lead 36-33 at the midway point.
 
Mosley's three treys all came within a two-minute stretch as he flipped a 7-7 tie into a 15-9 Bears lead with 13 minutes to go in the first stanza. The Bears survived a 12-2 Saint Mary's run midway through the half and when Mosley and Prim tied things up, 21-21, the Bears kept their composure, giving them a chance to take the lead into the intermission.
 
The Bears made 16-of-26 shots in the opening 20 minutes.
