ST. LOUIS – For just the fifth time since joining the Missouri Valley Conference in 1990, Missouri State University has won the league's coveted All-Sports Championship Trophy, the league announced Wednesday (May 23).
The trophy standings are calculated based on how each school finishes in the league's 17 sponsored championship sports. MSU sponsors 14 of those championship sports and finished with a score of 7.895, nearly a point higher than second-place Southern Illinois (6.931).
Illinois State (6.859), Indiana State (6.495) and Northern Iowa (6.421) rounded out the top five in this year's standings.
"As a university, it is always our goal to be competitive in the MVC All-Sports Trophy race, and this year we truly excelled across the board," said MSU Director of Athletics Kyle Moats. "I am very proud of all of our teams and how hard our coaches, staff and student-athletes worked to achieve this special award."
The Bears won MVC regular-season titles in men's soccer, volleyball and baseball during the 2017-18 season and also won MVC Tournament / MVC Championship Meet crowns in women's soccer, volleyball, women's swimming and diving, women's golf, women's tennis and baseball.
Missouri State finished in second place in softball, women's soccer and women's basketball in 2018-19 and also won the men's swimming and diving championship in the Mid-American Conference, which is not factored into the MVC award formula.
This year's trophy run is Missouri State's first since winning the award in 2011-12. The Bears have also earned the MVC All-Sports Trophy in 1999-2000, 2001-02 and 2002-03. Since 1995, only three schools -- Missouri State, Illinois State and former member Wichita State -- have won the award.
Finishes in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball are based on regular-season competition. All other sports are determined by finish at the championship tournament or championship meet.
Last year, Missouri State finished fifth in the MVC All-Sports standings with champion Wichita State (8.493) earning the award for the 23rd time overall and fifth year in a row.
