WICHITA, Kan. -- Missouri State opened its spring and Missouri Valley Conference tennis season Thursday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to Wichita State at Wichita Country Club.
The Bears fell to 2-1 on the season after earning a pair of dual victories in the fall, while the Shockers (1-0) extended their MVC unbeaten streak that began way back in 2009.
"For our first match of the year I thought we competed well," remarked head coach
Mallory Weber after the competition. "Wichita State is arguably the best team we will play all year, so if we can continue to build off this match we have a great season ahead of us."
Missouri State's duo of
Fati Khamissi and
Ekaterina Donetskova posted a strong showing at No. 2 doubles, leading 4-2 when the Shockers clinched the doubles point by winning the Nos. 1 and 3 matches.
Wichita State swept the singles competition, however the Bears got strong showings from Donetskova,
Alexia Meyer and
Phoebe Boeschen in the bottom half of the lineup, with each taking at least four games from their WSU opponent.
The Bears return to the Sunflower State next Friday for a 10 a.m. match at Kansas State.
