SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Missouri State University softball program will hold Legacy Weekend in conjunction with the Bears' weekend series at Killian Stadium on April 9-10 against Southern Illinois. Highlighting the weekend festivities is the reunion and celebration of the 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2006 Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship teams.
This season marks the 20th anniversary of the 1996 team which won the first of three-straight tournament titles. It is also the 10th anniversary of the 2006 championship team.
Fans will be able to celebrate with these championship teams at the April 9 doubleheader as a member of each team will throw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to the first game. In between games, the members of those title-winning teams in attendance will be recognized in an on-field ceremony.
Following the doubleheader, the Bears are holding a celebratory reception on site for fans and alumni. Head coach Holly Hesse will have a short program and refreshments will be available.
The 1996 went 34-22 and won 11 of the final 12 regular season games before sweeping through the MVC Tournament. Many members returned in 1997 that had a 35-26 record highlighted by a nine-game winning streak late in the season and went 4-1 to earn the conference tournament title. The 1998 team finished 31-22 with a 7-1 finish to the regular season and a sweep in the tournament.
The 2006 team set program records with a 40-17 mark, the most wins in school history. The Bears went 18-4 in league play, the highest win total in conference play. That team had two separate win-streaks of 10 or more games and cruised to three-straight 4-0 wins in the conference tournament.
Tickets for all Bears' home games this season can be purchased at the Killian Stadium box office on the day of the game.
