CLEVELAND - Missouri State swimming and diving closed out its regular season Saturday and completed it with the team's 12th weekly award, as the Mid-American Conference named Miguel Davila its Men's Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
The MSU senior earned three season-best times and won all three races he competed in during the two-day Shamrock Invitational from Jan. 29-30 at Rolfs Aquatic Center on the campus of Notre Dame.
Racing against swimmers from No. 25 Notre Dame, Grand Canyon and Iowa, Davila made his opening appearance in the 500-yard freestyle. Davila touched the wall in a time of 4 minutes, 26.95 seconds for first place. His finish was three seconds ahead of runner-up and fellow Bear Minki Kang, while it also was the fastest time completed by a Mid-American Conference swimmer in the event this season.
Davila's success continued in the 400 IM. The Colombia native came in ahead of Grand Canyon's Iegor Lytvenok by less than .60 seconds for a finish of 3:58.77 for first. His 400 IM time at the Invitational is the fifth fastest in the MAC this year.
The MSU senior concluded the Invitational by wrapping up his third first-place finish in the 1650 free. His time of 15:27.41 was over nine seconds faster than the rest of the field and is the second fastest in the MAC to this point.
Davila earned his first weekly honor of the season, previously being named swimmer of the week once as a junior. Davila joins a group of six other Bears swimmers that has been recognized this year. Uvis Kalnins has been selected three times, Dora Kiss, Artur Osvath and Lauren Pavel have each been picked twice, while Josie Pearson and Minki Kang were each honored once.
Both Missouri State swimming and diving teams look ahead to their respective conference championships, with the women's squad traveling next to Carbondale, Illinois, for the Missouri Valley Championship beginning on Feb. 17.
