ST. LOUIS -- Missouri State University finished third in the 2014-15 Missouri Valley Conference's annual All-Sports Award standings, the league announced Monday.
Behind league championships in baseball, men's soccer and women's swimming and diving, Missouri State posted an average finish of 4.29 in the 14 MVC sports it sponsors. The Bears also finished second in softball and women's golf during the current academic year.
"Our goal is to finish high in the All-Sports standings every year, and I'm very proud of how our teams competed in The Valley this year," said Director of Athletics Kyle Moats. "Winning our eighth straight title in women's swimming and our fourth men's soccer title in six years are great achievements, and obviously the great season our baseball team is putting together only makes it more special."
Wichita State claimed its third straight MVC All-Sports Award with an average finish of 2.30 and six team championships. Southern Illinois (3.91) was second, followed by Missouri State, Northern Iowa (4.43) and Indiana State (4.54) to round out the top five in the 10-member league. The conference does not publically announce the scores of the 6-10 finishers.
It marked WSU's 21st MVC All-Sports Award and ninth in the last 12 years. Since 1995-96, only Wichita State (9 times), Illinois State (7) and Missouri State (4) have won the prestigious MVC All-Sports Award, which accounts for team finishes in 18 conference-sponsored sports.
Missouri State's third-place showing is its highest since it won the award during the 2011-12 academic year. The Bears built up to that title with fourth-place finishes in 2008-09 and 2009-10 before a second-place finish in the standings in 2010-11. MSU was sixth a year ago with a 5.19 average finish.
