Oct. 9, 2015 SPRINGFIELD - Carla Morton, a native of Omaha, Neb., has recently joined the Missouri State University Athletics staff as an academic counselor in the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Academic Achievement Center.
Morton is a 2008 graduate of the University of South Dakota where she earned her bachelor's degree in physical education. She later completed her master of education at the University of Missouri in 2010.
She and her husband, Chris, an assistant coach for the Missouri State football team, came to Springfield earlier this year. In that transition, she served as an academic advisor for MSU's Department of Nursing where she assisted in its marketing, recruiting and retention efforts from May until starting her current role in Athletics on Sept. 28, 2015.
Dan Raines, director of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Academic Achievement Center, says Morton is an ideal fit for his department, which oversees the academic efforts for all 17 intercollegiate programs and some 400 student-athletes on the Missouri State campus.
"Carla brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position, and we are thrilled to add her to our team," said Raines. I think our students and coaches will really enjoy working with her and will benefit from her expertise."
Morton is a member of N4A, the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics, and was a member of the Advisors Forum at the University of Missouri from 2008-13. She was also nominated for Excellence in Advising honor at Missouri in 2012.
Her most-recent career stop was at Minnesota, where she was an academic advisor for the sports of women's hockey, men's gymnastics and women's track from January of 2014 until moving to Springfield in February of 2015. Prior to that, she spent time as a student advisor at Wisconsin-Stout in 2013 and five years (2008-13) at the University of Missouri - first as a graduate assistant and later as a full-time academic coordinator for the sports of football, gymnastics and soccer as part of MU's Total Person Program.
She joins a team at Missouri State that includes Raines as well as assistant director Michelle Noland, fellow academic counselor A'dja Jones and graduate assistant Katie Garrett.
