Oct. 31, 2015 Recap | Final Stats
Head coach Dave Steckel
Opening statement...
"Happy Halloween. I guess as you can tell by my costume, I'm disguised as a football coach today. We have to do a better job. I keep sounding like a broken record but we're showing improvement and what's hurting us right now is third downs. We gotta do a better job offensively and defensively on third downs. I made a big push about it being key downs and we're finding out that it is."
On the SDSU defense and 3rd downs...
"You gotta tip your hat to them a little. That's a really well-coached defense over there. So we sustained, and what happened was we moved the ball early on them and then we got crushed on third downs. We get into a third down situation and we don't capitalize and we have to focus and do a better job on third downs."
On offensive troubles…
"I'm really proud of our kids and I love our kids. They're practicing hard and they're doing everything we ask them to do. We just gotta step it up as coaches and keep improving on which direction we're going. As a coach I see glimmers of improvement, however, my patience is wearing on me and we have to do a better job of coaching to get those improvements better. It's always going to come back to fundamentals, the plan to win, third downs, green zone. I'm probably going to be a very redundant person over my time here but that's what it's all about."
On SDSU and John Steigelmeier…
"They do a really good job of knowing where they're going. He's had a 19-year run there which is awesome. We talked before the game. We go way back. He was very encouraging about staying the course and that's what we're going to do."
Senior Ryan Heaston
On offensive troubles...
"It's unfortunate but it's always small things we gotta work on and get better at. We still believe, regardless of how many games left. We're still having fun and we're still enjoying being out there with each other so we're gonna keep working and make something happen."
On jumpstarting MSU's offense...
"The plays are designed to work. It could be something small, somebody makes a mistake and it just messes up that play, so it's just continue to be fundamental, do your job and that's when we'll make the plays."
On lack of offensive results…
"It's tough, cause it's our job to have their back and when we can't do that it's frustrating but as a team we have to do a better job on both sides to just get it done."
Sophomore Colby Isbell
On MSU defense vs. SDSU offense...
"Overall we just need to get better at fundamentals and keep working like we were. Nobody gave up, which is speaking highly of our coaches. They put it in us and keep driving us. As a defense we keep coming together and we just keep working."
On defensive improvement…
"As a group we're doing a lot better, we just gotta keep working. "
