SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The top two sides in the Missouri Valley Conference will battle for a shot at the regular season title on Saturday when the Missouri State women's soccer team (9-4-1, 3-1-0) hosts league leader Drake (6-8-2, 3-0-2) at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium at 2:00 p.m. on Senior Day. The winner of the match can clinch at least a share of the regular season MVC title.
"We have played well at home and Drake is tough in Iowa, so I am glad the match is here," said head coach Rob Brewer. "This could be a big result for us and it is wonderful to have the opportunity to do this in front of our fans. This group of seniors has meant a lot to this program on and off the field."
A Missouri State win on Saturday will give the Bears at least a share of the league title with one match remaining. A victory would also clinch the top-seed in the MVC Tournament for MSU, regardless of next week's result. A Drake win clinches an outright league title for the Bulldogs.
Sophomore Brooke Zimmerman earned MVC Offensive Player of the Week honors after tallying the game-winner against Illinois State last week. It was Zimmerman's fourth career game-winner, all scored at Allison South Stadium, more than any other player in the stadium's two year history.
Senior Alix Opfer sits atop the league with eight goals on the season. She also holds the league points lead with 19, a figure that ranks the Springfield native eighth on the single season program list. Opfer has played all 70 matches of her career, starting in all but one of those matches over four seasons.
Fellow senior Jessica Perry earned up her ninth win of the year with the victory over Illinois State last week. The win over the Redbirds was also her ninth career shutout at MSU. Both totals rank in the top-6 on the MSU all-time leaders list.
Freshman Brooke Prondzinski has twice as many assists on the season as any other league player with eight. She ranks 10th in the country in assists per game (0.62).
The Bears have held five-consecutive home clean sheets against Drake dating back to 2005. MSU is 3-0-2 against the Bulldogs in Springfield in that span.
Missouri State will close out the regular season at Evansville on Oct. 29 at 6:00 p.m. Following Thursday's match against the Purple Aces, the Bears will prepare for the MVC Tournament also held in Evansville on November 6-8.
