SPRINGFIELD - Missouri State men's basketball coach Paul Lusk announced today that he has received a National Letter of Intent from Edwardsville (Ill.) High School point guard Shawn Roundtree to join the Bears this fall.
Roundtree, who is the third freshman and fifth player overall in MSU's 2014 recruiting class, was named Class 3A-4A (large school) Player of the Year by the Belleville News-Democrat this season. He led Edwardsville High to a fourth-place finish in the Illinois Class 4A state tournament and averaged 17.3 points, 8.0 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game for the 30-4 Tigers. He also knocked down 55 3-pointers and made 85 percent of his free throws for coach Mike Waldo.
"Shawn is an outstanding point guard who impacts winning," said Lusk. "He has all the great qualities needed in a point guard -- he scores it, he facilitates, and most importantly he has great leadership abilities. We're thrilled that he has chosen Missouri State to pursue his college career and his education."
Roundtree was recently honored by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association as an elite Class 3A-4A All-State first-team selection.
The 6-foot, 185-pounder led Edwardsville to an 85-13 overall record in his three varsity seasons. He was second among all St. Louis metro players this season in assists (8.03) after leading all city players as a junior (9.00). He averaged 9.8 points and 2.4 rebounds in 2012-13 after producing 8.0 points and 5.9 assists his sophomore season.
Roundtree also competed on the AAU competitive circuit for the SW Illinois Jets.
Lusk's third signing class also includes junior college transfers Camyn Boone (6-6, 235, F, Seattle, Wash., Mountain View High, Mesa Community College) and Loomis Gerring (6-5, 200, F, Grandview, Mo., Grandview High, Vincennes University) as well as high school standouts Chris Kendrix (6-5, 185, G/F, Willard, Mo., Willard High) and Robin Thompson (6-6, 195, F, St. Louis, Mo., MICDS).
