ST. LOUIS - Missouri State men's basketball senior Nathan Scheer (G/F, Washington, Mo.) was named to the 12-member Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, the league announced Thursday (March 6).
Scheer, a Construction Management major with a 3.75 grade-point average, was named to the first team for the second year in a row. He was also a second-team selection in 2012 making him just the fourth MSU player to earn the honor three times. Dale Ribble (1991-93), Ben Kandlbinder (1996-98) and Will Creekmore (2009-11) also earned the distinction three times..
Joining Scheer on the first team are MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Walt Lemon, Jr. of Bradley, Justin Gant of Indiana State, Anthony Beane of Southern Illinois, Chip Rank of Northern Iowa and Nick Zeisloft of Illinois State.
Scheer has now earned five MVC postseason honors, including 2013 MVC All-Bench Team distinction and 2011 MVC All-Freshman Team honors, in addition to his three MVC Scholar-Athlete Team selections. He ranks among the Valley's active career leaders in 3-pointers (102) and games played (129) and is just the 11th MSU player to knock down 100 or more treys in a career, ranking 11th all-time in makes and 9th in attempts (301) while ranking 4th on the squad's career list for games played.
The Bears are the No. 4 seed for this weekend's Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in St. Louis. MSU (19-11) will do battle with No. 5 seed Illinois State on Friday at 2:35 p.m., with the winner advancing to Saturday's 1:35 p.m., semifinal.
