SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Missouri State women's soccer team (0-1-0) fell in the season-opener, 2-1, on a late goal by Oral Roberts (1-0-0) at Plaster Field on Friday night. MSU's Shelby Stewart tied the match with a header goal in the 79th minute.
"The first game is not the whole season," said head coach Rob Brewer. "We have a tough schedule ahead, so we have to stay focused. If you lose, you need to learn and use that lesson to get better."
Both teams played a possession game in the first half with the Bears out-shooting the Golden Eagles, 5-3. Lauren Fussell and Kelsey Fouch each had a pair of shots in the half.
The second half saw both teams show more aggressiveness on offense. In the 70th minute, the Bears' defenders broke up a scramble in front of the net, but the loose ball was picked up by an ORU player. She sent a low shot that went off the post and in for a 1-0 Oral Roberts lead.
Missouri State battled back. In the 79th minute, Molly Brewer moved up the left sideline and sent a cross into the box. It was headed from the back post by Molly Huber to an open Shelby Stewart. Stewart headed the ball into the open net for the equalizing goal.
But in the 88th minute, an ORU rush would lead to the go-ahead goal. The Golden Eagles picked up the ball near midfield and a pass into the middle of the field was kicked out of the air and in for a goal.
Rachel Weimer added two shots as the Bears out-shot ORU, 11-9 in the match. Huber, Jessica Roberts and Kelsey Goff each registered a shot.
Transfer goalkeeper Jessica Perry got her first start in net as a Bear. She made two saves in her debut.
The Bears return to action this Sunday, August 25, for a 5:00 p.m. match against at Plaster Field. Missouri State will continue the home stand with a 6:00 p.m. match next Friday (Aug. 30) and a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Arkansas on Sept. 1 at Cooper Family Soccer Plex.
