HOUSTON, Texas - Missouri State sophomore diver Garrett Nevels continued his breakout season on Monday (March 11) at the 2013 NCAA Zone D Diving Championships where he finished 12th overall in the 1-meter diving final.

"As a freshman, Garrett learned about the level of competition you go up against at Zones," head diving coach Jim Huelskamp said. "This year, we pieced together a solid list of dives and that put him in a better position to do well in prelims and finish strong in finals."

With the top 18 athletes qualifying for finals, Nevels had no problem making the first cut as he posted the 10th-highest score (311.65) through six dives.

Nevels, the lone MSU representative for the second year in a row, improved three spots from his 15th-place finish at the 2012 Zone D Championships in Iowa City. On Monday, the Bears' school record holder on 1- and 3-meter notched a two-round total of 628.50 points to finish in the top half of the 31-man field. Additionally, the sophomore from Lee's Summit, Mo. edged out former Jayhawk Diving Club teammate Ford McLiney (Texas A&M) by two points.

The men's 3-meter diving competition on Tuesday will begin at 5:30 p.m. Live results for the tomorrow's action can be found on

Schools participating in the men's field include Texas, Texas A&M, SMU, TCU, Wisconsin, Missouri, LSU, New Orleans, Missouri State, Wisconsin-Green Bay and St. Louis. Mizzou junior David Bonuchi, who is a two-time NCAA qualifier, punched his ticket once again as he took home first on 1-meter with a combined 787.10 points.

The NCAA Zone D regional has been allotted eight NCAA Championships bids for the men's side. If one diver wins more than two or more events; the progression down the list of criteria continues until eight male divers are selected.
