SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - After recording his fourth scoreless outing in Missouri Valley Conference play last week, sophomore pitcher Nick Petree has been selected State Farm MVC Pitcher of the Week for the second time in 2012, the league office announced Monday.
Petree turned in seven shutout innings in the Bears' 1-0 win over Southern Illinois Friday (April 27), striking out nine while allowing five hits and walking just one. The right-hander lowered his Division I-leading ERA to 0.70 and extended his personal scoreless streak to 22.0 straight innings, marking his second stretch of 20+ scoreless innings in 2012. The Clinton, Mo., product also stretched his string of consecutive innings without giving up an earned run to 56 2/3 frames over his last nine outings dating back to March 2.
Petree, who is 3-1 with 39 strikeouts over 35.1 innings pitched in Valley play, leads the MVC in overall victories and ERA, and ranks third in innings pitched (70.1) and fourth in strikeouts (76). Additionally, Petree's season win total ranked fourth in all of Division I last week, and if the season ended today, his ERA would be the lowest for any Valley pitcher reaching the qualifying minimum in a single season since Tulsa's Walt Wrona posted a 0.43 mark in 1974.
With Petree's citation as the league's pitcher of the week for the second time (also selected on March 19), a Missouri State player has been honored by the MVC with one of its weekly awards on five separate occasions this season.
Up next, the Bears (31-14, 10-4 MVC) will travel to Lawrence, Kan., where they will face off against Air Force Friday at 2 p.m. to open a three-game non-conference stretch. MSU will take on Air Force again Saturday at 11 a.m., before concluding the weekend with a 1 p.m. game against host Kansas on Sunday.
