SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Missouri State's Catherine Dolan scored a big victory Wednesday (June 29) in her first match at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Golf Championship in Bandon, Ore.
Dolan advanced 2 and 1 over Lisa McCloskey of Montgomery, Texas, at the Old MacDonald Course at Bandon Dunes Resort to move into the round of 32. She is set to face Grace Na, an All-American from Pepperdine, at 10:30 a.m. Central time Thursday, with the winner advancing to the round of 16 in the afternoon.
A senior-to-be from Ballwin, Mo., Dolan was seeded 60th of the 64 match play participants after shooting 80-78--158 in stroke play qualifying, while McCloskey was seeded fifth after posting 148. McCloskey will be a senior at USC, where she was ranked fourth in the nation this past season. She also was the runner-up at WAPL a year ago.
After tying the first two holes, Dolan broke on top with a birdie at the par 4 third hole, then went 2 up with a par at no. 5. She led as much as 4 up after a birdie at the 13th, but McCloskey rallied by winning 14 and 16 before Dolan closed it out on the 17th with a par.
