SPRINGFIELD - A total of 207 Missouri State University student-athletes achieved a 3.0 grade point average or higher during the fall 2010 semester, the University announced Thursday (Jan. 13).
Student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA are included on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and will be recognized at halftime of the January 30 men's basketball against Northern Iowa at JQH Arena (7:05 p.m.). Of the 378 student-athletes currently participating in MSU's 16 intercollegiate athletic programs, 55 percent received this distinction for the fall with 33 student-athletes having a perfect 4.0 GPA.
In addition, 198 student-athletes (52 percent) maintained at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average for their collegiate academic careers, including 146 who eclipsed a 3.25 or better.
The fall semester also saw 15 Missouri State standouts earn academic all-conference honors, while two earned CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-America distinction -- football All-American David Arkin and men's soccer sensation Heath Melugin. Missouri State also snagged five Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards during the fall semester.
"Celebrating the successes of our student-athletes in the classroom is very important," said Bryan Hicks, associate director of athletics for student-athlete development. "Student-athletes play a key role in supporting the academic goals of the University, and they work very hard to be positive ambassadors for Missouri State on and off the playing field. Their achievements should be commended."
Hicks, whose department has implemented a number of innovative programs to support the academic progress and success of MSU's student-athletes, is in his second year at the University. The department's newest program, STAMP, was rolled out in August. Student-Athletes Making Progress (toward degrees) was established to provide additional academic support for at-risk student-athletes. The Academic Achievement Center for Intercollegiate Athletics has also modified its monitoring and support services to better meet the needs of its clients who often face unrivaled time and demands due to practice, competition and travel.
Women's swimming and diving leads all sports with 34 honorees on the AD Honor Roll, followed by football (31), women's track and field (27), women's soccer (23) and volleyball (15). Missouri State's complete AD Honor Roll for the Fall 2010 includes:
