ST. LOUIS -- Missouri State junior Kyle Weems has been named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday (Jan. 10). Weems helped MSU to a 3-0 week in league play, capped by Sunday night's 59-56 win at Wichita State.
From Topeka, Kan., Weems led the Bears in scoring (14.0), rebounding (7.7) and steals (2.0) during the three wins this week as the Bears improved to 5-0 in the MVC for the first time ever. He led MSU with 17 points in Friday's win over Evansville which helped MSU tie a school record for longest home winning streak (17 games) during its Division I era. He also notched 10 rebounds against the Aces to record his seventh career double-double. He was among a trio of Bears to score a game-high 11 points in Sunday's nationally-televised win at Wichita State, also producing 6 rebounds, 2 three-pointers and 3 assists in that game to pace the win.
He was 15-for-31 (.484) from the field on the week, including five three-pointers and was 7-for-10 (.700) at the free throw line with 42 points, 23 rebounds, 6 steals, 4 assists and a pair of blocks. His three steals at Wichita pushed him over 100 career steals.
This is Weems' second MVC Player of the Week honor this season, as he also earned the distinction on Dec. 20.
The Bears (13-3, 5-0) will host rival Southern Illinois on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at JQH Arena. MSU will put its league-best seven-game winning streak and 17-game home winning streak on the line, and tickets are available by calling (417) 836-7678 or visiting www.MissouriStateTix.com.
