After a thrilling 58-57 win at defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Northern Iowa on Wednesday in their MVC opener, the Missouri State Bears return to JQH Arena Saturday (7:05 p.m.) to take on visiting Illinois State in their MVC home opener.
 This will mark the third straight season the Bears have opened their nine-game Valley home slate with the Redbirds. ISU topped the Bears 72-69 in overtime in the first-ever MVC game at JQH Arena (Dec. 28, 2008), but MSU avenged that loss last season with a 68-64 victory on New Year’s Day (Jan., 1, 2010) before 10,008 -- the second-largest home crowd in Missouri State history.
 In Wednesday’s win at UNI, Kyle Weems (Jr., F, Topeka, Kan.) knocked down a three-pointer with 2.5 seconds remaining to seal a 58-57, come-from-behind win over UNI and end the Panthers’ 21-game home winning streak. Jermaine Mallett (Sr., G, Jackson, Miss.) led the Bears with 14 points, while Weems scored 12, and Adam Leonard (Sr., G, Lee’s Summit, Mo.) added 11.
 Illinois State comes to town after dropping its MVC opener, 64-53, to visiting Creighton on Wednesday. The Redbirds (8-4, 0-1) got 58 percent of their points from their bench and shot just 35.8 percent from the field in their league debut. ISU had won three of its previous four games before falling to Creighton.
