SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Missouri State will retire the No. 6 jersey of former baseball great Ryan Howard during a halftime ceremony with Howard in attendance at the Dec. 18 men’s basketball game against Saint Louis at 7:05 p.m. at JQH Arena.
A St. Louis native who played at Missouri State from 1999-2001, Howard finished his collegiate career with 50 home runs, 183 RBIs and a .335 career average in 172 games. He was the 1999 Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year.
Since being drafted by Philadelphia in the fifth round of the 2001 draft, Howard has enjoyed a stellar professional career. His long list of accomplishments as a member of the Phillies includes 2005 National League Rookie of the Year, 2006 NL MVP, 2006 Home Run Derby champion, 2008 World Series champion, 2009 NLCS MVP and three All-Star selections.
Howard debuted with the Phillies in 2004, accumulating a career batting average of .279 with 253 homers and 748 RBIs in 875 games.
