Secelia Winkfield was an all-purpose, do-everything weapon on the Lady Bears’ NCAA Final Four team in 1991-92, giving coach Cheryl Burnett’s club scoring, rebounding, ball handling, defense and leadership on and off the floor. A four-year regular for the Lady Bears, Winkfield sparked the 31-3 Bears in the 92 NCAA second round as she grabbed a loose ball in the closing seconds of overtime at Iowa and tossed in an eight-footer to send Missouri State to the regional tournament in Boulder, Colo. From there, the Lady Bears mauled UCLA and Ole Miss to extend their school record winning streak to 21 games in a row and advanced to the Final Four in Los Angeles. Winkfield was one of two starters who came back in 1992-93 and led the 23-9 Lady Bears to an MVC title, another conference tourney crown and on to the NCAA Sweet 16. A native of Kansas City, Winkfield was the eighth player in Lady Bears’ history to record 1,000 career points, and, 15 years later, she remained in 13th place on the all-time scoring list with 1,333 points. Winkfield is in the Missouri State all-time top 10 in games played (123), field goals (547), attempts (1,119) and is still fourth in assists (455) and third in steals (302). She had a school season record 105 steals as a senior and four of the top 10 season totals in that category at the time she graduated. She led the team in rebounding and assists one year each and in steals twice. Winkfield was a sophomore on the Lady Bears’ first NCAA Tourney team in 1991. She was a Kodak all-district choice and Kodak All-America honorable mention as a senior, a two-time all-Gateway selection, and Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year her final season. She was in the Pan American games in 1991 and was one of nine Missouri State players selected to the MVC all-centennial team in 2007.
