In track, he was a standout high jumper for teams which regularly challenged for MIAA honors, finished third in the league four years in a row in the conference indoor meet and third three times and league runner-up in 1965 in the MIAA outdoor championship. Golden placed in the top five in the high jump in both the MIAA indoor meet and outdoor meets all four years he competed, including finishing second in the 1962 indoor meet and winning the championship in the 1962 outdoor event. He tied the school record in the high jump as a junior and held a share of that record at the time he graduated. He was also a track co-captain as a senior in 1965.
