Mark Garrett was the baseball Bears’ starting centerfield-er and leadoff hitter throughout a four-year career from 1979 through 1982 for coach Bill Rowe in the last four years SMS played in Division II.  A native of St. Louis, Garrett was a member of the outstanding SMS freshman crop in the 1979 season as the Bears claimed their final MIAA title that year. The Bears reached NCAA tourney play in 1979 and 1980 and captured an NCAA regional crown in 1982 to advance to the Division II World Series in Riverside, Calif. Garrett was picked as both the SMS and MIAA Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 1979 and was named both the SMS and MIAA Most Valuable Player as a junior in 1981. He was a third team CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in 1982 and was on the 1981 ABCA all-region team.  He was named to the 1979 regional all-tourney team and was an all-MIAA first team selection in 1980 and 1981. Garrett led SMS in several offensive categories his junior year and he finished his career in 1982 as the all-time SMS leader in games (178), at bats (612), runs (180), hits (201), triples (20), walks (96), hit by pitch (16) and stolen bases (54) and was also in the all-time top five in doubles, total bases and extra-base hits.
