KIM FLIEG PETERS
Volleyball, 1989-92
Inducted February 12, 2005

Kim Flieg came to SMS from Festus, Mo., and earned four letters for the volleyball Bears of coach Linda Dollar while starting three seasons for SMS from 1989 to 1992. Flieg spent her first two seasons as a middle blocker, starting at that position as a sophomore. She was second on the team and ninth in the Gateway in hitting percentage as the Bears finished 7-2 in conference play, two games back of undefeated champ UNI. SMS then beat UNI in four games for the conference tourney title to win the league’s automatic NCAA berth. The Bears were an eighth seed in the NCAA Northwest Region and drew top-seeded Hawaii in the first round in Honolulu, losing in three games. The Bears finished the season 24-8. Flieg moved to setter her junior year, and in her first season in that spot chalked up 1,095 assists, the second-best season total in SMS history, with a single-match record 72 at Wichita State. She was second on the squad in blocks, digs and aces and was named to the all-league first team. SMS finished 17-13 and tied for the league title at 8-1. In 1992, SMS went from the Gateway to the Missouri Valley and went to a double round robin format in league play. SMS again shared the league title with Illinois State with a 14-2 conference mark. The Bears were 24-11 overall, lost in the finals of the MVC tourney, and won two of four matches in a national invitational meet. Flieg repeated her all-conference selection, was named to the all-Mideast Region third team, the CoSIDA Academic All-District team and the MVC All-Academic team. She had 1,304 assists to become the first SMS volleyballer to record 1,000 or more assists in back-to-back seasons. She was one of five volleyballers on the SMS All-Decade honor team. She finished second in both career and single season assists.
