Darrin Newbold was a standout defensive end for the football Bears in a career which spanned the move of SMS out of the MIAA and Division II into the Mid-Continent Conference and Division I-AA. A native of Aurora, Mo., who had injury problems early in his career, Newbold lettered for the Bears of coach Rich Johanningmeier his last three seasons and was a starter part of his sophomore year and all of his junior and senior campaigns. He was an all-MCC second team choice as a junior when he finished third on the SMS squad in total tackles with 98 and led the ballclub in pass breakups with 12. A year later, Newbold was a first team all-conference selection with 107 total tackles, second best on the SMS team, and led the ballclub in sacks, passes broken up and forced fumbles. He finished his career with 241 total tackles in 28 SMS games, broke up 25 passes, and had 26 sacks for 165 yards in losses. An SMS co-captain as a senior, Newbold was honored as the first SMS Coors Player of the Year award winner for football and was also given the Virgil Cheek Athletic Achievement Award in 1983 when he graduated from SMS. Newbold was a seventh round draft choice of the NFL New York Jets and ultimately played for the Oklahoma Outlaws of the United States Football League.
